Jodo: The Art of the Staff

What is Jodo? This video is a great introduction! It’s from a Japanese show (recorded in English) about sports and martial arts. As you can see, even few people in Japan have heard of jodo, but it is an elegant art for both men and women.

The kata labeled routines 1-6 in the second half of the video are actually kata 4-9, and they are from the seite jodo curriculum we teach and practice in our dojo. There are also several basic movements (kihon) that are practiced to help prepare for kata.

We only teach mature teenagers and adults due to the control and focus required in wielding the jo (staff) and tachi (sword), but Oliveri Sensei has practiced with people from ages 15 to 74 of all sizes, has trained alongside people with hip, shoulder, and/or knee replacements, and has even seen video of one of his instructors performing with a gentleman with one leg. If you’re looking for a low-impact way to get moving, or for a general introduction to the martial arts, jodo is for you!
